Portland-based writer and activist Anthony Alvarado, author of DIY Resistance: 36 Ways to Fight Back and host of the podcast The Magic Hour, will talk about groups who have made steps in fighting intolerance.

9. Portrait of an Epidemic: Mathematical Modeling in Modern Day Epidemiology
Scientists from the Institute for Disease Modeling will discuss the benefits of using mathematical models to guide global efforts towards the eradication and control of infectious diseases.

The first installment of the Spean Summer Shorts series (which will help raise funds for Spean Rajana, a group that aims to be "the leading force in advancing Khmer arts worldwide") will focus on global Cambodian culture, and how Cambodian artists around the world are honoring their Khmer culture through their work. The program includes David Siey's “Year Zero," directorial debuts from Bunthoeun Real and Vannra Yan, works from local filmmakers, and an advance preview of an upcoming documentary about "the Elvis of Cambodia." Bruce Ramsey's The Panic of 1893 delves into the final economic depression of the 19th century, and explains how the residents of a newly formed Washington State managed to survive.

35. Dave Zirin: Jim Brown
The sports journalist Dave Zirin (The Nation), co-author with Michael Bennett of Things That Make White People Uncomfortable, will read from his new biography of the great Jim Brown—football player with the Cleveland Browns, Black Power activist, and star.

36. Kristin Hannah: The Great Alone
In this new novel, a traumatized Vietnam vet moves his family, including his 13-year-old daughter Leni, to live in the wilds of Alaska. But as winter approaches and Leni's father's sanity leaks away, Leni and her mother Cora realize that they're in greater danger from the paterfamilias than from the terrifyingly cold temperatures and 18-hour night. Established in 1911, this three-day festival honors Suquamish's Chief Seattle with a graveside ceremony, a co-ed softball tournament, a parade through downtown Suquamish, a horseshoe tournament, a pow wow, and more.

Celebrate black LGBTQ+ communities in Seattle and beyond with four days of activities focused on health and wellness, equity, and community building. In addition to Pride parties and a film festival, the weekend also includes a trans symposium, multi-generational conversations, and more.

59. GreenStage Shakespeare in the Park and Backyard Bard
Theater is alive in Seattle, but, as in most places, it generally isn't cheap. GreenStage's productions are a nice change: See Shakespeare and Shakespeare-based works in the great outdoors—for free. This year, as part of their 30th annual Shakespeare in the Park series, they'll present Henry IV, Part 1 and The Three Musketeers. They'll also offer the one-hour-long Backyard Bard series, a "smaller Shakespeare in the Park for smaller spaces," featuring The Two Gentlemen of Verona and The Winter's Tale.
