Fairbanks is expecting snow showers Friday and about an inch of snow starting Sunday, according to National Weather Service meteorologists in Fairbanks.
Meteorologist Alekya Srinivasan said that she expects to see scattered snow showers Thursday night and isolated snow showers Friday.
Srinivasan is “slightly confident” that Fairbanks will receive approximately one inch of snow starting Wednesday night. The White Mountains and the Alaska Range will receive closer to three inches of snow. She said that the snow will be mostly powdery, following the usual snow trends in Fairbanks.
“There is a chance we may get less snow than we expect but the lower levels of the atmosphere do seem like they are retaining a bit moisture, so it’s possible that we’ll see snow, but we most likely won’t see a lot of snow,” she said.
Srinivasan said that there is low pressure over the state and high pressure system moving into the Interior. “So the interaction between the low and the high are causing a buildup of moisture,” she said.
This is likely not the last chance of snow this winter. “There’s a good chance we’ll see snow in April as well,” Srinivasan said.
Fairbanks has accumulated 59.1 inches of snow this winter, just under the average snowfall of 59.8 inches.
Recent temperatures have been above normal in the Fairbanks area with highs between 39 degrees Fahrenheit to 42 degrees between Saturday and Wednesday. Temperatures normally range between 2 and 30 degrees this time of year.
Temperatures are expected to decrease over the weekend to highs in the low 20s and lows near five below through the middle of next week. Starting around April 4, temperatures are expected to climb back into the high 30s and low 40s into normal April weather.
