Grace Barry, a first-year Social Science and Anthropology student at Maynooth University, is preparing to embark on a transformative volunteering experience from Kildare to the Philippines this summer.
Grace will work with the Cork-based charity, SERVE, at Nano Nagle School, where she will be supporting the Badjao community in partnership with the Presentation Sisters.
Throughout the summer, Grace will assist with various educational activities at the school, using her existing skills to contribute to the classes, while also learning from local people and fellow volunteers. One of the highlights of her experience will be helping to organise and run a sports day for the children in the community.
Grace’s passion for social care and her desire to work in developing countries are central to her motivation. Having previously volunteered in Zambia in 2023 through her school, she is eager to continue her international volunteer work and make a positive impact in another part of the world. "I’m deeply committed to working in social care, and I believe this opportunity in the Philippines will help me gain invaluable experience in helping communities that face significant challenges," Grace said.
Volunteering runs in Grace’s family, as both her parents are actively involved in charity work. Her father works with the Spiritans, further inspiring her desire to make a difference.
To support her volunteer trip, Grace is organising a fundraising campaign, which includes a bake sale, a Wicklow Way hike, and a wild camping event. All proceeds will go towards supporting her work with SERVE and the Badjao community.
Grace is excited to be part of this impactful programme and looks forward to learning from the people she meets in the Philippines while sharing her own skills and experiences.
SERVE is a development and volunteering organisation committed to providing equal opportunities for poor communities living in Southern Africa, South-East Asia, and South America.
