Oceanside takes to air to down Point Loma

Share

Ask Kyrin Beachem whether he would rather score running the ball or passing and the Oceanside High quarterback smiles.

“Running, definitely running,” said Beachem, who ran for a 21-yard TD, had a 34-yard scoring scamper called back and passed for a pair of touchdowns to lead the visiting Pirates into the section Division I semifinals with a 51-35 victory over Point Loma.

It was a game fifth-seeded Oceanside (6-6) trailed 28-21 at halftime before Beachem led the Pirates to three straight TDs to start the second half.

That run included Beachem’s 21-yard scamper and a 14-yard pass to Malachi Tuua. When Point Loma closed back to 41-35 with half of the fourth quarter still remaining, Beachem hit Armand Fesili for 60-yard TD on the very next play.

End of ball game.

“We talked about how their defensive ends came up on the option and we took advantage of that,” said the senior. “I told the team we’d come back and we’re right where we want to be.”

Beachem was a glittering 10 of 13 for 187 yards and was not intercepted. He also gained 46 yards on the ground, keeping the Pointers guessing.

Backup quarterback Alex Miller added 122 yards through the air, including a 59-yard touchdown, as the Pirates shredded the Pointers’ secondary for 309 yards.

Point Loma’s Kyle Grady did everything he could to keep Point Loma (6-5) close, completing 15 of 23 for 260 yards and touchdowns of 65 and 46 yards. Both of those scores were in the first half.

The Pirates now get a rematch at No. 1-seeded El Camino, a team they beat 27-24 two weeks ago.
