Torrey Pines rolls over Pirates, shutting out Oceanside for first time

Share

In what in most football seasons would be a premier matchup between Oceanside and Torrey Pines turned out to be all Torrey Pines.

The Falcons’ wing-T offense, which averaged 282 rushing yards per game, rolled up 389 rushing yards as the No. 7-ranked Falcons continued their resurgence with a 30-0 win over Oceanside on Friday to kickoff homecoming festivities.

“As good as it is to score 30 points, holding Oceanside to zero points is a big deal,’’ Torrey Pines quarterback Jason Heine said. “We were expecting a battle, but from the first play we knew we could run our stuff.

“We just ran the ball down their throat.’’

The shutout was the first time Torrey Pines has ever blanked Oceanside.

Mac Bingham carried nine times for 144 yards and two touchdowns while his Falcons teammate had 13 carries for 133 yards and one TD.

By winning, Torrey Pines (5-2, 2-1) improved its lead in the series to 11-9-1 with its third consecutive win over Oceanside.

It also kept the Pirates (2-5) winless in Avocado League play with an 0-4 record, the first 0-4 start since 1978.

“This will be a morale booster for the rest of league play,’’ Heine said. “We’re at Carlsbad next week and that’s a tough place to play.’’

Carlsbad was the last team to shut out Oceanside. That was 28-0 back in 2005.

Torrey Pines took a 20-0 halftime lead with a meticulous offense that rolled up 225 yards, including 196 rushing yards.

But the defense withstood a pair of deep scoring threats by Oceanside, which was hurt by four motion penalties after reaching the Falcons 11 and a second one that ran out of downs at the Falcons’ 26.

Nine first-half penalties kept the Pirates from scoring.
