What you need to know:

  • Kobs and Heathens fans can afford to throw swipes at their Pirates counterparts on grounds that even if the latter got a treble this season, it cannot match the success the two attained during their treble winning campaigns. Reason, in the campaigns Heathens and Kobs won trebles they collected more than three trophies with the defunct Makerere 10s inclusive.

KAMPALA. Buzz Pirates are on the brink of winning their first treble since the club was born in 1996. The Sea Robbers have already bagged the Uganda Cup, League and with a 16 point lead, they are set to seal the Guinness National Rugby Sevens Series tomorrow at Kyadondo.

According to Uganda Rugby Union (URU) stats, only two sides in Hima Heathens and Betway Kobs have ever won a treble before.

Heathens have achieved the feat on a record three occasions in 2002, 2004 and 2009 while their rivals Kobs managed it once in 2006.
Pirates’ linchpin Ivan Magomu thinks winning a treble is a sign of even greater things to happen at the club in future.

He also thinks it signifies power shift in local rugby after his side lurked in the shadows of Heathens and Kobs for ages.
“The last one or so has seen us get better every day to the extent of winning silverware and we think it’s the beginning of a good spell,” Magomu told Daily Monitor.

“Things have somehow changed as our improvement has made us the side to beat unlike in the past,” he added.
