The ocean covers about 71 per cent of our world - yet for many it's a place of mystery.

For most people the great blue deep is either a fun place to spend a holiday on the edge of, seen from the comfort of a sandy beach, or it's a dramatic and exiting movie set for shocking shark attacks and dashing pirate captains to be viewed at home on TV.

But in reality a vast proportion of humans are in the dark as to what it's like out there and how sinister the sea can really be.

An infographic created by international shipping company Barrington Freight helps explains what to look out for out on the water - whether it be raging storms, places of mystery or a distinctly less romantic and rather more terrifying pirate than fiction has created.

Piracy rates and weather conditions have been examined to assess exactly where the most dangerous areas are in the world.

Areas of very real and notorious piracy such as Somalia have been given a high danger rating and others such as Margarita Island off the coast of Venezuela have been allocated a low rating.
